Today, I sat down with two extraordinary students, that I have the opportunity to serve as one of their mentors through their medical journey. One asked, “How do you overcome imposter syndrome?” Imposter syndrome represents that feeling of doubting your abilities or feeling like a fraud, as if you don’t deserve the accolades, celebrations, titles, assignments.
Oh, how I could relate to these beautiful black female future physicians. I believe women, especially black women, spend so much time in perpetual transition and transformation. Wife, mother (and many times father), daughter, friend, sister, female colleague, boss are broad hats that we wear, and in each of them we give an adaptation of ourselves, with effortless transition, that we start to believe our whole existence is an act, but in reality it is our POWER.
So, along with three other extraordinary women, we sat across the table and poured into the strength of their queendom. We challenged these young women to stand in their power.
One of my favorite poems/quotes by Marianne Williamson, “Our Deepest Fear”
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear in that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the World. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel unsure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. As we let our own Light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
